Build A Garden

January 10, 2018 by macwinslow

A wonderful way to encourage sustainable hunger relief is to partner with an organization that integrates community gardening with agricultural education. Through the use of gardens the cycle of hunger can be broken. People learning to grow and prepare their own food can help break the cycle of hunger. Talk to your school or community relief organization about working together to build a garden that can provide education as well as fresh produce to those that need it most. Check our Katie’s Krops to see what kids across the country are doing with their gardens to fight hunger and maybe get some funding as well. Check out these cool raised garden plans.

Schools everywhere are starting to integrate gardens into the school day. They are doing things Sprout Scouts, an after school club that teaches kids how to grow, and prepare fresh fruits and vegetables.

Help at Your School

January 10, 2018 by macwinslow

If 1 in 6 kids in the US are hungry that there are kids in most schools that need help. In many cases the school may already have a program in place that helps these kids. If they do they very likely need help with donations, sorting, packing, and distributing the food to the kids that need it. If you want to get involved, just ask your school guidance counselor if there is something you can do. You may even want to do your own food drive to benefit your school’s hunger relief program. If there isn’t a program already in place conside working with your school to start a Backpack Buddies program that can serve kids that may not have much food when they go home on the weekends.

Collect Food Instead of Presents

January 10, 2018 by macwinslow

One of the best day of the year for a kid is their birthday, and one of the best feeling a kid can have is helping others. If you put those 2 things together you have the recipe for the best birthday yet! The first thing that the founder of The Food Drive Kids did to fight hunger was to ask for food donations instead of presents for his 7th birthday, and he collected over 250 pounds of food to help his school’s Backpack Buddies program. It is one of the easiest ways to help and only takes a few steps:

  1. Talk to your parents to make sure they agree!
  2. Find your local hunger relief organization using Feeding America’s Food Bank Finder.
  3. Contact them to find out if there are certain items they need worse than others.
  4. Tell your birthday guests that you want them to bring food instead of presents.
  5. HAVE A PARTY!!
  6. Deliver the food to the food bank!
  7. Know that you made a difference for your birthday!
